Does definitely not work with AirTunes. Do not buy this unless you use airfoil (which I find opposite to my needs) I shouldnt have install this… Im really looking forward to get my mac work as it used to !
Guys, I couldn’t find your support e-mail to report so I have to try from here… Its crashing every 3 music mostly when switch from 44.1 to any other higher sample rate. The last version was stable. I have it on a Mac OS X Maverics. Please leave the support contact In your webpage.
Very impressive results, highly recommended, especially when using a Mac as a music source in a high end audio system. Automatic sample rate switching!! Comparable to software costing much much more. Hopefully this will be developed further.
Not only will BitPerfect improve the sound quality of music played via iTunes (thanks to CoreAudio Hog Mode support and buffering of the music to memory), it will also automatically switch the audio output device to the respective bit depth and sample rate, and tie iTunes to a specified audio output device! No more manual switching of the main sound output!! Very convenient! Highly recommended for all of us crazy audiophiles out there! :-)
Thanks for nice tool! Music from computer makes fun again!
It seems that someone has an interest in deleting negative comments here! As I said regarding version 0.32 (which cant be read anymore) this app is nothing but an aural enhancement like the Aphex devices back in the eighties. It changes midrange frequency information while adding harmonics. I cannot understand that people, who call themselves "audiophiles", like to treat their favorite music, which might has been recorded and produced by highly capable musicians anf techniques, with an effect that falsifies the musical content with a claptrap. With this app the music does not sound like it was intended to sound! And therefore I dont like it at all. While testing the app I listened to all kinds of musical genres using a Macbook Pro with a Calyx DAC/Preamp and several Sennheiser, AKG and Ultrasone headphones.
This app takes out the mush that I hadnt realized was there until…this app took it out. Holy Smokes...
As i am very interested in highest quality music playback i had an eye on amarra fro a long time, just i felt the price is a tad high as i also have several possibilities to reach the same goal (not all features) plus even digital room correctino on a pc for errrm *nothing* (free Software exists for that purpose). On the Mac it looks a bit different, so i was really interested in trying out BitPefect, also hoping it might offer high quality sample rate conversion, as i currently use an unusual device for music playback which is usually a high end recording device for guitars with superb sound quality. So well, i tried BitPerfect minutes ago and say yeeehaw! Thats exactly what i searched for: lightweight, very fair price, stable and also offering SRC for by purpose. Effects of memory playback should not be discussed here and can be found in the net for sure a few hundred times... Its great and will run for now and ever :) Thanks for the fine programming!
Just to start off with: I hardly ever write reviews. In this matter of Bitperfect, however, I have veered off my usual course. For whom this piece of software is (IMHO): Anyone who a) has got a high-quality external DAC attached to their computing rig, b) seeks to squeeze the last bit of information from their hi-res audio files contained in their iTunes library (or elsewhere), and c) is annoyed by the fact that iTunes does not by default replay audio at the resolution of the respective file. My music library sports a good number of high-res audio files, i.e. tracks that were digitized from scratch at, for instance, 192kHz/24bit, from vinyl played back with High-End equipment. Granted, data size is substantial for any given track digitized this way. BUT: Enjoyment of music is, well, phenomenal. Detail, sound stage, definition, subtleties, dynamics, you name it: Recordings finally come to life with the combination of Bitperfect and a high-quality DAC. For whom this piece of software is not necessarily recommended, IMHO: Individuals who continue to believe that MP3, AAC and any other lossy formats have the capacity to embed true musical information. Kudos. Well done, Tim and Doug.
Im using an echo firewire-interface, a dedicated headphone-amp and good beyerdynamic headphones – i cant hear a (real) difference? I would say there is a better separation and a bit wider stage, but bitperfect wouldnt survive a blind-test :-( Sorry, but for me its located in the area of audiophile voodoo (but cheaper than 300$-cables, of course)
This App doesnt change music on my rMBP with B&W MM-1 speakers. Apart from it has bugs as the iTunes playlist sometime stops for no reason when BitPerfect is enabled. Save your bucks for something else.
If somebody haear an effect while using BitPerfect, it´s on the record. From now on iTunes and professional audio softwares are on the same sound quality level – without an additional user interface. Very, very useful, many thanks!
my DAC has no ASIO-support and with BitPerfect I have now a media-player with that what you call „WASAPI-EXCLUSIVE MODE“ with an Windows-PC. With Windows the only thing that worked well was the Adobe WAV-Editor (very expensive and without the comfort of a media player)… and yes… I can hear the difference… at least I believe that… for me, the application was a good buy… spendt weeks to find something like that for windows without a result (due to having the fostex hp-a3 dac) … with a mac and bit perfect the same took about 15 minutes (finding/buying/installing the app and making the right settings)… I am really believing to have a better sound quality. Havent made a blind test: no need for that. Some people here have problems with the app or cannot here a difference… not my problem :D I can not swear that this app is so good as I hope it is cauz I am not an audio-expert…. Somebody has written that the app is adding harmonics and aural enhancements… Hmmm…?!
Great disappointment: this software does not work with the excellente Focusrite/Scarlett USB interfaces. All you get is clicks on the outputs, both with a MacPro 2009 Quadcore and the lastest MacPro. I contacted BitPerfect’s customer support - they seem to know it ("hardware incompatibility“) but don’t tell you in advance. There is also no money back. Conclusion: do not waste your money on that software if you are using those (or similar other) semi-prof sound interfaces, that may use incompatible D/A converters, unless you have a proof or BitPerfect’s committment that it will work.
This app is a great one because it offers good sound quality and fully integrates with iTunes. What has stopped me from purchasing other audiophile apps is that they have their own standalone apps, which inevitably introduces duplication or other issues…such as not being apple to use an apple remote to change tracks and volume. (Which you CAN do in iTunes + bitperfect.) This app is definitely on the right trajectory and I look forward to future versions and (hopefully) more documentation.
I didnt expect much from this app, but in my stereo it makes a clear, and very welcome, difference compared with playing audio directly from iTunes. I have a cheap DAC attached to Dynaudio studio monitors (which are supposed to be quite detailed and revealing) and Bitperfect makes lossless files sound both much more open and spacious and much more detailed. Honestly, I was shocked at the difference. For $5 you have to give it a shot if you really want to get the best sound quality without giving up the interface offered by iTunes.
I really does work, I always felt iTunes was doing something to my music, it never sounded as good as on my stereo using a CD. Obviously there is a bit rate difference, but still it was not right. The sound is much more spacious and full using BitPerfect. The only thing to watch out for is how it operates. It takes the sound driver on your mac, mutes it, and then sends it out an unused driver you select in the app preferences. It may take a bit of switcing around to get the settings to play correctly through airplay. I set my internal driver to "easy connect audio" and then set bit perfect to "airplay" and that seemed to work. Overall its highly recemeded, especially if your computer is hooked up to good speakers.
Thi application technically behaves (and I hear it) like a hack between iTunes -added distortion and my digital USB port. In fact, it makes the job AFTER iTunes does bad "analog" (floating point) magic with digital sound. This is really hack… indeed, bad sound of iTunes is not related to driver between iTunes and Audio equipment. Listen to Decibel… much better, and you have separate controls for digital volume and analog volume. Even free Songbird has separate control for digital volume. BitPerfect has something like separate audio control… which doesnt work with my USB output and Grace m903 amplifier.
You definitely solved some issues I had noticed. I am still very happy to have purchased this app. I find the sound of my music benefits greatly when I turn this little app on. I know it can be time consuming to produce such a thing, but a manual with clear, concise prose revealing what each setting does and how it affects the overall production of the effect would help me to further understand what my otherwise mostly random choices in the preference pane do. I have also quickly noticed that the menubar icon is strikingly misalligned with the other icons beside BitPerfects. Im glad and grateful that work is being continued on this app!
